Do You Have a DePuy ASR Hip Replacement?

 

The manufacturer of ASR hip replacements, DePuy makes a number of orthopedic products.  Although most of their hip replacement surgeries have great success, recent reports demonstrate more patients than expected have experienced pain and other side effects that have required a second replacement surgery known as revision surgery.  Five years after hip replacement surgery around 12 percent of the patients who had ASR resurfacing devices and 13 percent who received the ASR total hip replacement needed a second replacement surgery.  For this reason, DePuy is requiring an ASR hip replacement recall for the ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

 

There have been a number of symptoms reported by patients within the first five years after implantation that you should be aware of.  Initially, you may experience pain, swelling and difficulty walking and that is no concern for alarm.  However, if these symptoms continue, this may be a sign that you have serious complications.  These complications may indicate a loosening of the implant within the bone, possible bone fracture or dislocation of the prosthetic device.  The hip replacement unit is comprised of a ball and socket that move against each other which may cause wearing of the metal components generating small particles between them.  For some patients, these metal particles cause an inflammatory response in the joint and surrounding muscles that may cause pain and swelling and eventually cause bone necrosis (bone death) and nerve damage.  Your orthopedic surgeon will need to run tests to determine if your hip is working properly.  This may require X-rays, ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to be taken as well as blood tests to determine what problem you are having.

 

 

What Do I Need to do If I Have an ASR Hip Implant?

 

The DePuy hip replacement system was placed on the market in July 2003, so if your hip surgery was before July 2003, your implant is not subject to a recall.  This recall means that you may need further testing and monitoring to make sure your hip replacement system is working properly.  Needless to say, some patients may require a second hip replacement surgery.  The manufacturer does not keep a list of patients who have had this implant so you will need to contact your healthcare provider or hospital to determine whether you received an DePuy ASR replacement.  You may have to request this information in person to protect your privacy.  It is important to know that the DePuy ASR hip Resurfacing System was approved for use outside the US and the ASR XL Acetabular System was available worldwide.

 

Once you know you have an ASR hip replacement, you will need to set up an appointment with your orthopedic surgeon so that an evaluation can be made to see if your implant is working properly.  It is important that you continue with follow up visits at least once a year for the first five years even if you are not experiencing symptoms to make sure your implant continues working properly.  Your healthcare provider will discuss an appropriate monitoring plan with you and any treatment that you may need. 

 

DePuy is offering compensation for their ASR hip replacement recall.  DePuy has stated "we intend to cover reasonable and customary costs of testing and treatment if you need services including revision surgery if it is necessary, associated with the recall of ASR.  Bills for services should first be submitted to your insurance company or Medicare in the usual manner and DePuy will than reimburse you for your reasonable out of pocket expenses and your insurance company or payor (public or private) for customary and reasonable expenses related to the ASR recall."  Further information is available on their website.  Ultimately, it is in your best interest to contact an ASR Hip Replacement Lawyer before you contact DePuy.  ASR hip attorneys are very knowledgeable about your legal rights and can provide protection against unfair practice.
