The ice hotel in Swedish Lapland
The Ice hotel Jukkasjarvi in Swedish Lapland normally opens at the beginning of December but has actually opened earlier this year due to forward planning construction and architects hard work. The ice hotel is absolutely a work of art and it takes quite a lot of planning before hand and during the build. The ice hotel is different every year with different designs and there is something new to see every year which makes it such a popular tourist attraction and the fact that the hotel is made of ice makes it all the more magical.
The ice hotel this year has 60 ice rooms and is still the largest Ice hotel there is. Some of the rooms consist of a reception area, ice church, main ice hall and the very popular Ice bar where you can enjoy wonderful food and drinks from ice glasses.
The ice hotel is constructed initially by adding a mixture of snow and ice over steel frames which are eventually removed. The nearby river provides the all important ice and artists from all over the world begin the task of designing and building the ice hotel. The Thorne River is the source of the ice and when the ice hotel melts in the spring, the melted snow and ice will flow back into the river.
The ice hotel is a wonderful experience for adults and children and there are many things to see including the experience of staying in some of the ice hotel rooms where you can stay for the night. There are different themed rooms from which to choose from and of course you will need a very warm sleeping bag in which to stay warm
Located on the ice hotel site is also the rather beautiful and magical Ice chapel where real weddings can take place. There is also a wooden traditional chapel from which to choose from also. Outside in the grounds of the ice hotel, there are magical ice sculptures which you can walk around and admire.
The ice hotel can be reached from a number of locations and many trips also include access to the ice hotel. There are lots of snowmobile trips that will take you out to the ice hotel where you can have a drink and some refreshments before driving back to your destination. The ice hotel is well worth a trip and really is a magical experience and if you do get the opportunity to visit, you will certainly not be disappointed.
