Wine Cellars

Well now that you have decided that you will have a 1500 bottle wine cellar. We have to decide on what kind of racks you are going to use...My personal opinion is that I like redwood racking. It will last a lifetime. Isn't that what you are looking for anyway? The kind of redwood you will decide on will make a difference on the cost. Either you get heart redwood or premium redwood. The premium redwood will give your wine cellar personality. It is not a sloid color and It is a lot less expensive. That way you can spend more money on wine. Makes sense doesn't it? If you decide to go with kit racking..As opposed to custom racking..that's great. You can make the designer kits look like custom racking if you know what you are doing and at lot less cost. I have been recommending kits to people for years. This is the less expensive end of wine racks, but with all the trim that is available today, those kits can be made to look like a custom cellar. I have done quite a few over the years like that. When you have a custom wine cellar, it will be deigned to take up every inch of space. And unless you made very precise measurements, you still may have to cut the racks in the field. The builder may have added an inch or so, not thinking that the racks that are ordered are made to fit that exact space. A lot of times I hear from the client that the factory was at fault when they made the racks. The factory can only make racks for the dimensions they are given. As a Master Wine Cellar Builder, when I arrive at the house, I have found rooms shrink, sometimes they even get bigger. So at that point you have to modify your racking. Not knowing all the ins and outs of the racking, you could have a hard time making everything look great.

So whether you get designer kits or custom racking, the variety is almost endless. You can have simple individual racking, diamond bins, case storage, display racks, magnum racks, waterfall racking, vertical display racking, rectangular racking. As I said the possibilities are endless.

The next point we should look at is the floor. What do you want? Do you want ceramic tile, slate, maybe just take that concrete floor and glaze it. Or, how about a cork floor? I have installed some cork floors that are fantastic. If you have a light floor with dark racking, that is a great look. You can find that look on my CD. So when you install that floor, remember to seal it to the walls. A silicone caulk between the wall and floor will do the job. This is another area contractors don't look at. You are trying to get a tight seal all around the room. Another point to remember is not install baseboard now. Baseboard will be attached to the racking at the finish.

The next point is getting the door for your new wine cellar. It should be an exterior door. Well insulated and if you prefer a window, make sure it is also an insulated pane. When you install this door, make sure you seal all around the door, both inside and out. The door itself should have a weatherseal around the jamb also. 

So now we have talked a little about racking, floors , and a door. The only thing that is left is the cooling unit. Depending on the room size, you could go with a unit that could go through the wall oryou could go with a split system. A split system needs to be installed by your local hvac dealer. This has to be installed before the drywall goes up. Any other unit can be installed at a later date. My recomendation is, if you have a 1500 bottle wine cellar or more, go with a split system. If anything goes wrong with this cooling unit, it could be fixed by your local hvac company. Any other unit, you may have to send it back to the manufacture. This will leave a hole in your cellar and the manufacture will make every effort to get it back to you as soon as possible.
