HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE WINE

Making homemade wine is a very interesting, challenging and enjoyable hobby.. Many people think that fine wines can just be bought from wineries, however this is not so for one can make fine wine by learning the basic and fundamental steps in making wine and he can do this at home.

Other people think that making homemade wine is just extracting juice from grapes and letting it ferment . This is a misconception since there are fine wines which come  from different fruits and even flowers and vegetables. Once you've learned to make homemade wine you will discover that there is a great difference in the pricing between your homemade wine and the ones you purchase in the wineries. You should first start from the easiest and most known ones, the red and white wines.

The basic and fundamental stages in winemaking that you should learn are as follows: flavor, extraction, fermentation, bottling and aging. Then you also have to know the equipments and ingredients you need to make your homemade wine great.

First Stage: Flavor and Extraction

Homemade wines could be extracted  not only from grapes but from fruits that have stronger flavors so it could be diluted with water to make a fine and agreeable concentration. In this process the flavor that is extracted and the liquid  that is taken is diluted which is called the "must" You could add sugar and yeast  to the must  in order to start the fermentation.

Second Stage: The Fermentation Process

Fermentation process is the reaction of the yeast to the sugar which has been added to the must. The yeast consumes the sugar that has been added to the must and produces alcohol. Fermentation has 2 stages; the first stage is that wherein the yeast builds up a colony and the second stage is the alcohol production in the must. Most of the time the first stage occurs in the primary container which contains the must and the pulp of the ingredients. Then wait for the instructed time in your recipe for you to strain the liquid and pour it to the container with a fermentation lock to block the air out. As the yeast continues to use the remaining oxygen bubbles will come out and this will only stop when the oxygen is completely gone. When the yeast is done with its work it will move down to the bottom of your container and your wine will start to be clear. Then its time for you to rake it again , it's called siphoningand place it in a clean jar to age.

Third Stage: Bottling and Aging

This is very easy yet very important to be properly done. When fermentation process is done and you have allowed it to age for sometime you may now start to bottle your wine and let it age for more to allow all ingredients to interact more with each other then you will produce a wonderful flavor which you usually taste in finer wines.

Equipments Needed:

It is important that you know the basic equipments you need in order to get done with the 3 stages of making homemade wine.

• plastic bucket approximately 2 gallons with a lid that exactly fits on top
• plastic or wooden spoon
• large enamel pan
• pair of ladies nylons for straining
• fermenting container with airlock
• funnel
• bottles with corks
• plastic tube for siphoning
• bottle brush for cleaning
