There is most likely a circular or possibly a square shaped piece of cork board sitting on your coffee table. Some people like to place beverage glasses on top of them. Others have them simply for effect; to create a façade of austerity. The most vital part of coffee table upkeep, whether for class or for function, are these simple drink coasters.
Beverage coasters (also called beermats, but they're still just drink coasters) are underappreciated and not used nearly as often as they should be. Those of us who own wooden coffee tables know how condensation from cold beverages can really mess up the wood, but so few of us actually try to do anything about it.
Moisture causes wood to buckle, expand, and rot. The moisture build up from your own drink glasses will be plenty to start this process, and eventually you'll find yourself with a smelly table that is warped and falling apart, needing to buy a new one...and a coffee table costs quite a bit more than a set of sandstone coasters.
There are many different types of coasters to choose from: tile coasters, stone coasters, ceramic coasters, and roller coasters (haha, just kidding). In fact, there are so many different types of coasters that many people have even been collecting them, much like stamp collecting.
The word for coaster collecting is Tegestology, with the collectors known as Tegestologists. This is especially popular in Germany, where the most commonly collected type of coaster are the ones made for specific brands of beer (called Bierdeckel). Now these people truly understand the value of quality coaster furniture.
For those who just want a simple coaster set, you can browse through coaster dining set sections on different websites and in different stores, although you will probably be able to find a better selection online.
For instance, there are websites devoted entirely to beverage coasters, and sell themed sets. There are themes for fairy tales, nursery rhymes, universities, animals, you name it. If you're going to buy a whole set, you may as well get something you like. Nobody wants to use a run of the mill, thin, brown cork coaster. Wouldn't you rather set your glass on top of a bear, or a cute little kitten?
Also, if you happen to own a restaurant, it is a good idea to provide coasters to your customers as well. This prevents their glass from sliding off of the table, and personalized coasters look fancy. Or if you want to give somebody a gift that they can actually use, coaster sets are the way to go.
You can find a theme that you know they will like, such as their favorite animal or the university they graduated from, or you can make a customized coaster set with an inside joke or saying written on it. So, what are you waiting for? There is no reason to continue abusing your coffee table like this, and countless reasons to start using coasters!
