Goji Berries

Goji (also known as gogi) berries iare very common in Asia and have been used for centuries, but in North America they have only recently been recognized for their potential. They are considered to be such a great success that a multi billion bussines is about to bloom over the next few years. Wolfberries is another name that they are known as, they contain at least eighteen amino acids, more iron than spinach and more beta carotene than carrots. The goji berry is considered by more than one person to be the best anti-aging fruit available to this date. Also they have a normal nutty taste so it's not hard to understand their success.

Woody plants that grow between three and twelve feet tall are the place where the goji berries can be found. The "red diamonds" berries are considered the best kind of berries and are grown in the Ningxia region of China. They are so important to the Chinese people that they celebrate a several-day wolfberry festival each August. The flood plains near the Yellow River are the usual place where these miracle berries are agrown. The Chinese harvest the red, oblong berries by shaking the plants. The most popular export products are dried or powdered berries, and in a juice. The newest thing to appear is a wine based on this plant. Goji plants have been cultivated in England since they were introduced as a tea tree in about 1730 by the third Duke of Argyll. They are common as hedges and are still a favorite with most of England`s birds.

Throughout Asia, goji berries have a lengthy history of treating allergies, chronic liver ailments, eye conditions, tuberculosis and rashes and many other symptomes.

Goji is known for its positive effects on hepatitis B,in alternative medicine, because of the physalin produced by the berries. It is also used to treat heart and blood pressure conditions, as a memory enhancer, a treatment for breast and cervical cancer, an anti-inflammatory, and an antifungal, antibacterial. Both the United States and Canada have reported they are yet to prove goji has a primary benefit for most of these conditions. But several studies done in China have proved its' power.

People can also eat dry berries after cooking them, of course. The most common way to eat them is in soups. Both berries and leaves are used for tea. The bark can be applied as a poultice for infected wounds, thus proving that it has a large variety of uses which can help improve life quality. They can also be eaten as they are without being cooked, however its' not recommended. They have a slightly tart flavor. Goji berries are known for their multiple, tiny yellow seeds.
